Designs of ancient Mexico

Designs of ancient Mexico. Watercolor on paper

Lately I have been drawing circles based on Aztec "malacates" (spindle whorls).

Some of these designs are based on the work of Jorge Enciso, a Mexican artist who documented these circular objects found in archeological digs, and that were very common just before the Conquest. Their motifs are predominantly geometrical or can represent flowers, animals and even human figures.

The three last pictures are from my visit to the "Museo Nacional de Antropología" in Mexico City last summer.
